The Black Cats were heavily linked with Shankland whilst they were a League One club in the summer of 2019 but the move didn’t materialise and the player instead joined Dundee United.
The Echo’s sister title in Scotland, the Edinburgh Evening News, has stated that clubs in Saudi Arabia and England have made enquiries about Shankland’s availability during the summer transfer window.

A burglar stole a PlayStation, holiday savings and lingerie from a home after he was seen hanging around outside in a dressing gown.
David Parkin helped himself to belongings when he entered a home in the Ryhope area of Sunderland on May 1 this year. The 45-year-old entered the house on more than one occasion and made off with £400 cash, a games console and underwear as a couple were sleeping upstairs.
Parkin, of Rowell Close, Ryhope, Sunderland, appeared at Newcastle’s Moot Hall via link from HMP Hull to be sentenced for burglary. He had admitted the offence.

The court heard that the householder’s daughter and her partner were in the house at the time of the burglary. Nicoleta Alistari, prosecuting, said: “At around 5am, the daughter woke up to let the cat out and went back to bed, leaving the door unlocked. She heard a noise downstairs and her partner shouted ‘Is anyone there?’ There was no answer.
“CCTV was checked and the defendant was seen approaching the home, wearing a dressing gown, but did not enter. He returned minutes later and left the home carrying a black bag. He entered again at 8.17am and ran out when the partner shouted. The defendant was arrested the same day.”
The court heard that among the items stolen, were a PlayStation, around £400 in cash which the woman was saving for a trip to the Dominican Republic, and lingerie. In a victim statement, the householder said she was left “anxious and scared” following the burglary.
Jamie Adams, defending, said: “When you look into this man’s background, [his offending] really is brought about by experiences which he had when very young.” Mr Adams said Parkin had been a victim of abuse and a violent assault which left him with PTSD. He also struggles with drug use which he has used as a “coping mechanism”.
Sentencing Parkin, Recorder Caroline Sellars jailed him for 876 days.
