The Wings fell behind two goals early in the third period to the defensive-minded Islanders, who also have arguably the best goaltender in the NHL in Ilya Sorokin, and basically rallied twice to earn a 4-3 overtime victory.
Lucas Raymond scored the game-winner at 1 minute, 25 seconds into overtime to cap a dramatic victory.
“Huge win,” Raymond said. “In the third period and being down a couple (goals), a couple games in a row, and we haven’t been able to pull them out. Tonight we were able to get it and it means a lot.
“We stayed calm and we got the win.”
The victory ended a three-game Wings’ (6-3-1) winless streak.
“We hung in there,” coach Derek Lalonde said. “We go down two (goals) against that team and that goalie, that’s a real good win for us.”
In past years, to suggest that the defense of the Detroit Red Wings was offensive took on an entirely different connotation.
This season, it’s a good thing. The team from the D is getting plenty of offensive contribution from the D. More than any other team in the NHL in fact.
Accounting for another four points in Monday’s 4-3 overtime verdict over the New York Islanders, Detroit’s blueline brigade was raising their NHL-leading number to 33 points. Moritz Seider was dishing out a pair of assists, while his defense partner Jake Walman would score once and also contribute a helper.
“It starts with D and then getting the puck up to our guys we got,” Walman told Bally Sports Detroit. “Everybody can bury it.”
Seider is leading all NHL defensemen with nine assists
