Manchester United “need to sell” as they close in on a deal for Andre Onana with West Ham looking to pick up Harry Maguire, BBC Sport reports.

The defender lost his status as club captain at Old Trafford on Sunday (16 July), potentially now pushing him closer to the exit as the Hammers aim to sign up him.

Previously the 30-year-old appeared intent on staying under Erik ten Hag, but with the Dutchman bringing in his former Ajax keeper and looking to overhaul the squad Maguire is one who can go.

According to Simon Stone for BBC Sport earlier on Sunday the Red Devils are not in a position to ignore all approaches if the manager is to be able to continue with transfer business they are required to bring cash in through sales.

He reports: “United also need to sell players to boost Ten Hag’s chances of reshaping his squad in the current transfer window as he closes in on Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

“The centre-back arrived at United from Leicester City for £80m in 2019, but is known to be among the players Ten Hag would now sell if a suitable offer came in.”

It certainly looks like Ten Hag and his side are ready to move on from their now-former skipper, and with David Moyes looking to bring him to West Ham there seems high potential for a deal to be agreed between the clubs.

Maguire’s own attitude to the move is surely the key factor, so in light of the captaincy decision it looks like things may be falling into place for the Irons boss to get his man.

There have been extensive injury issues for the Scot to contend with at the London Stadium in the past two years, with all of Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd suffering significant issues in that time.

Maguire fell out of favour in Manchester last season amid an injury-hit campaign of his own, but appears to be back to full fitness now.

While he seems highly unlikely to get an extended run in the first-team where he currently is, barring the sort of injury crisis that engulfed West Ham at times last term, he might be able to expect a starting position under Moyes.

The England regular may not be the man that fans are dreaming of after Declan Rice’s mega-money exit, but the manager clearly wants to add to his back line, so alongside two or three midfielders he could be a sensible addition if agreement could be reached.

In other West Ham news, the asking price for one of the preferred men to replace the departed captain could be set to decrease as money is put on the table.
