Rating every Leicester City summer signing – #4: Callum Doyle

Coventry’s finest has popped along the M69 to join the Enzo revolution, leaving a trail of tears and devastation in his wake.

Our writers rate the signing of the latest Leicester defensive phenom out of 10.

Iain Wright: 8.5

Young and hungry player, tick!

Experience of a promotion push, tick!

Playing in front of a fanbase that’s patient and supportive of young players… well, two out of three ain’t bad!

I’m sure he’ll be a player we can warm to and he adds some youthful energy to the mix. It also feels like he’s the first left footed centre back we’ve had this century, so that’s to be celebrated! It’s a shame he’s only on loan (note to self, never fall in love with a loan player) but in the situation we’re in, the opportunity to have him at all seems too good to miss.

Becky Taylor: 7.5

I’m pretty sure I haven’t watched a single minute of Doyle (I didn’t go to Northampton, so not even from those first minutes for us) play football so it’s an ill-educated rating at best.

Previously playing (and succeeding) under Enzo is an obvious positive, alongside having played 41 times in the Championship, so I’m expecting his rating to only improve when I actually see him play.

The best part of the signing has been some of the headloss of Coventry fans on Twitter, I’m in for the signing purely for that entertainment. A friend who is a Coventry fan also gave him a great review, so it seems a shame it’s only a loan.

Chris Iliffe: 9

I think Callum Doyle is a brilliant signing. He’s proven in the EFL, has played a good amount of football over the last two seasons and received rave reviews at Coventry last year. He can also tap in to the Enzo style quickly and his knowledge of the manager’s demands could help the other lads.

It’s a shame we couldn’t get him on a permanent deal but ultimately it shows that we have an absolute player on our hands if Manchester City rate him so highly that they’re keeping things open with a loan move. They must really like him and envisage him in their back three in upcoming seasons.

It seems like we’re going to play him in the left sided defence role and there’s some concern that he’s never covered the left-back position before. However, Nathan Ake was asked to do a similar thing at Man City and he’s transitioned well and I have high hopes for Callum doing exactly the same. He’s my shout for Young Player of the Season for us already.

Helen Thompson: 7.5

This has the potential to rise to an 8 but I’m trying to stay measured and not expect too much given his age. But Callum Doyle comes highly recommended by my husband (a Coventry season ticket holder) and, on top of a year’s Championship experience and a play-off final appearance, the fact that it’s only a season-long loan suggests that Manchester City are also not ready to part with the youngster.

It feels like the natural balance to any raised eyebrows at Conor Coady’s deal. Given his age, Coady is exactly the type of experienced, seasoned professional that you feel a Doyle can benefit from having alongside them.

Early appearances shouldn’t carry too much weight but I was impressed by the early snippets of Doyle. He’s calm and composed and has a lovely touch. There was an opportunity he set up in the first half at Northampton last weekend where he curled one into the box with his left foot that if we had anybody slightly taller and better at heading goals, may have notched him an assist.

He’s a player Maresca clearly knows well too from their time at Manchester City and I think it’s a statement of the types of players, and the youth, that he’s going to want to weave into the squad. This was one of the perks of being back in the Championship to me, the chance to see young players, whether coming through our academy or coming in to play a part. You’d hope Doyle is going to be a mainstay this season and I’m very interested to see what he does.

Andrew Smith: 7

A versatile ball-playing defender is never a bad thing and he’s already played a full season near the top of the Championship, so, what’s not to like? Add in that Maresca knows his game and he knows Maresca’s game, there doesn’t seem much to go wrong.

My only issue that I’d have preferred a permanent transfer – if he does too well for us, we could end up pricing ourselves out of buying him, which would be a real shame. But for now it’s a fairly steady 7/10.
