West Ham United is reportedly now seriously interested in signing a “top player” from Chelsea.

West Ham United are turning to Chelsea left back Ian Maatsen as Aaron Cresswell emerges as a Wolverhampton Wanderers target.

Chelsea talent Ian Maatsen could head across London with West Ham United now interested.

That is according to The Athletic, who claim that West Ham are one of many clubs chasing Maatsen.

It’s stated that Benfica, Nottingham Forest and Wolfsburg have all joined West Ham in expressing an interest in Maatsen.

Burnley are considered favourites to re-sign Maatsen on loan having struck a similar deal last summer.

Chelsea want £20million in order to sell Maatsen and there is a chance that another club could hijack the Clarets if they put the money on the table.

West Ham could be that club – especially with Aaron Cresswell potentially on his way out of East London.

Aaron Cresswell could leave West Ham

Few fans could have expected a rumour regarding Aaron Cresswell joining a Premier League rival, but here we are.

The Daily Mail report that Wolves are in talks to land Cresswell in a deal worth around £2.5million.

West Ham may hold out for a little more cash but there are open to letting Cresswell go in order to land a younger alternative.

The Hammers already have another experienced left back in Emerson Palmieri, so adding a youngster like Maatsen could make sense.

Cresswell has been a West Ham player for nine years now and selling him would sting a little, but the Hammers may well believe that the time is right to move on.

Who is Ian Maatsen?

Maatsen was born in Vlaardingen just outside of Rotterdam, around 20 minutes from Feyenoord’s De Kuip home.

The left unsurprisingly started out his career in the Feyenoord ranks before moving to city rivals Sparta Rotterdam and then PSV.

Chelsea pounced to land Maatsen at just 16, but he has only made one first-team appearance for the Blues.

Maatsen has been out on loan three times now, joining Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and Burnley to further his development.

The Dutchman was outstanding last season, providing a real attacking threat for Vincent Kompany’s superb Burnley side.

Hailed as a ‘top player’ by his former Coventry boss Mark Robins, Maatsen has more than proven himself in the Championship and is ready for a bigger challenge.

Now 21, Maatsen may well fancy settling down rather than going out on loan again – and staying in London with West Ham could appeal.
