Report: Premier League club open to selling £28m Leeds and Sunderland, wolves target, on one condition

A report from The Sunderland Echo claims Everton are open to selling Sunderland and Leeds United target Tom Cannon this summer – but only, if the Toffees manage to sign a new striker before the end of the transfer window.

Cannon, 20, starred on loan at Preston last season. Joining the Lilywhites in January, he scored an impressive eight goals in 21 games for Ryan Lowe’s side. That form has seen Championship clubs become interested this summer.

Sun reporter Alan Nixon claimed on his Patreon channel that Preston are confident of re-signing Cannon on loan this week. But clubs are now looking at a permanent deal. Leeds, Stoke, Sunderland and Andrea Radrizzani’s Sampdoria.

He is rated at a fee of £28m. The Echo deliver an update, claiming that Everton will sell Cannon this summer with Preston still favourites to get him – whether that is a loan, or permanently. But only, if they can get a replacement in.

Everton will sell Sunderland and Leeds target Cannon, on one condition

Cannon would be a very solid signing. A no.9, something Leeds lack. Patrick Bamford cannot be relied upon to be fit. Mateo Joseph is unproven and is injured, at least until September. Joe Gelhardt and Georginio Rutter are not no.9’s.

Gelhardt is better as a 10 and Daniel Farke was planning to use Rutter out wide, something he put to The 49ers in his pre-job interviews. It means Leeds are lacking a proper no.9. Cannon is that, a proven one at this level, too.

While many will argue he is not particularly proven, his eight goals in 21 means he can do it – and will only improve going forward with more and more game time. A fee of £8m is somewhat cheap. If possible, Leeds should do it.
