Aaron Hayden grabbed the only goal of the game at Prenton Park

Wrexham AFC clinched all three points at Prenton Park in a game in which they probably should have won more comfortably. Aaron Hayden grabbed the only goal of the game as Phil Parkinson’s men secured their second league victory of the season.

The game began with Wrexham hoping to capitalise on their height advantage and attempting to make full use of the numerous set-piece opportunities that came their way. Ryan Barnett was having a lot of joy down the right-hand side and his crosses were causing a lot of problems for the home defence.

The home fans were stunned into silence as the Dragons seemed to be carving their hosts open at will but it remained goalless. James McClean had possibly the best chance of the half as he raced through on goal but McGee made an excellent save to keep the scores level.

The referee drew the half to a close and Phil Parkinson would have been delighted at his side’s showing but once again missed chances meant that the Reds failed to really press home their advantage. The second half continued in much the same vein with Wrexham very much on the front foot and looking to take the game to their opponents.

The visitors finally got their reward in the 58th minute when Aaron Hayden headed home from a Luke Young cross to send the already noisy away support into raptures. The Reds nearly doubled their lead shortly afterwards when McClean fired across goal but Ollie Palmer wasn’t able to divert home.

Rovers did have a couple of half chances, without ever really testing Howard too much. Ryan Taylor did get a shot away but the Dragons stopper was able to tip over comfortably. The game was slipping away for the hosts by this point and although Wrexham still couldn’t quite find a deserved second goal, they did look fairly comfortable.

Tranmere became more and more discombobulated as the final whistle approached and never really looked like getting a point but there were a couple of nervy moments as they launched the ball into the Wrexham box. Phil Parkinson’s men clinched the victory however and they were full value for the win and there were fantastic scenes of celebration as the players made their way over to the away end at the final whistle to thank the 2,300 travelling supporters for their superb support.
