O’Rourke Exclusive: Tottenham to open talks over long-term Spurs player deal

Tottenham is set to begin discussions with Son Heung-min about a long-term contract, according to sources.
According to Football Insider, Tottenham are ready to begin discussions with Son Heung-min about a potential new contract.

Following Harry Kane’s departure, Son, 31, is now regarded as the main guy at Spurs and was chosen club captain earlier this summer.

Tottenham want to give the attacker a new contract to recognize his importance to Ange Postecoglou’s team.

It is believed they will first activate the one-year extension clause in his current deal – prolonging that contract until June 2026.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Spurs could yet open talks with Son about a completely fresh long-term deal.

They plan to open talks to that effect in the near future.

The South Korea international currently earns a reported wage of £190,000-a-week in North London.

He has started the 2023-24 campaign with three goals in six appearances across all competitions.

Son has started in a central-forward role in the last two Premier League games, and notched a hat-trick against promoted Burnley earlier this month (2 September).

The 31-year-old endured a below-par season last term – managing 14 goals and six assists in all competitions as Tottenham finished just eighth in the top flight.

His best return in English league football came in the 2021-22 campaign when he managed 23 goals and nine assists in 35 games and won the Golden Boot.
