Callum Wilson delivers emotional Newcastle apology after final heartbreak but issues Wembley pledge

Callum Wilson has praised Newcastle United supporters for producing an ‘unreal’ atmosphere at Wembley and has apologized after the Magpies fell to defeat in the Carabao Cup final

Callum Wilson has followed Newcastle United team-mate Bruno Guimaraes in apologizing to the Toon Army following the Carabao Cup final defeat. The Magpies’ first Wembley appearance for a domestic final in 24 years ended in a familiar scoreline, with Manchester United earning a 2-0 victory over Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle made a positive start to the contest, and Allan Saint-Maximin drew a fine save from David de Gea after a smart turn to evade Diogo Dalot. However, the Red Devils struck twice before the break and managed to hold the Magpies at bay to lift their first trophy since 2017Newcastle announce Callum Wilson contract extension

The Toon Army have already drawn widespread plaudits for their fervent support at Wembley and at Trafalgar Square the night before. Wilson has become the latest player to praise the fans for producing an ‘unreal’ atmosphere in the capital, and the number nine is adamant the team will be back at Wembley sooner rather than later.

He posted: “Sorry to all you amazing travelling fans that we couldn’t get the result we all so badly wanted. You made the atmosphere unreal and we will never take that for granted! We gave our best but on this occasion our best wasn’t good enough!

“Back to focusing on the league and finishing strong. Wembley we will be back!

“So proud to be a part of this team which has come such a long way in a short space of time. The future is bright for sure!”
