Paul Mullin of Wrexham was sent to hospital after a frightening challenge from Manchester United.

Nathan Bishop, a young Manchester United goalkeeper, became the villain against Wrexham after a brutal challenge sent star man Paul Mullin to the hospital in San Diego.

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin had to be evacuated from the pitch with an oxygen mask and quickly sent to hospital after being taken out by rookie goalkeeper Nathan Bishop during their pre-season game against Manchester United.

Bishop collided with the 28-year-old after misjudging the flight of the ball, resulting in a seven-minute delay in the game. Bishop flew out of his zone after 13 minutes and collided into Mullin with significant force.

As the striker stayed down, a stretcher was brought onto the field, and he was immediately given oxygen while surrounded by medics. Bishop was given a yellow card for the terrible challenge, but he was lucky to stay on the field.

Fortunately, Mullin was able to depart the field while still wearing his breathing mask before being replaced by Billy Waters. Despite this, he was moved to a nearby hospital for additional testing, where manager Phil Parkinson later revealed he had a ruptured lung.

“I mean, listen, Mulls has a small puncture in his lung, and he’s in the hospital right now,” Parkinson explained.

“But it’s a clumsy challenge from the goalkeeper, and there’s no need for me to make it.” It’s a solid crimson. It’s a hazardous challenge, which is why it’s a straight red, even though the official told me there might be a covering defender.

“If you add those two situations together, he should have been taken off the field.” Listen, losing Paul is a huge setback for us. He’s a fantastic player.”

After the incident, supporters booed Bishop everytime he touched the ball at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. He was replaced at halftime by Radek Vitek, as both clubs made major changes.

“It’s reckless, it’s dangerous, it doesn’t get anywhere near the ball,” ESPN co-commentator Stewart Robson said of the terrible challenge.

Wrexham will be hoping that Mullin’s injury does not sideline him for too long. Last season, he scored 38 goals in 46 National League games, including a brace in a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood, which secured promotion.

The striker joined Wrexham in July 2021 and quickly established himself as the club’s main striker under new owners Reynolds and McElhenney. Mullin was also one of the primary stars of the smash series ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ becoming a global celebrity as a result of his success.

Mullin has League Two experience and turned down a new deal with Cambridge United to join Wrexham. Fans were perplexed when Mullin moved down divisions at the age of 26, but two years later, his decision appears to be a stroke of genius.

Wrexham’s pre-season began with a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea in their first trip to the United States. They promptly answered, however, with a 4-0 victory over LA Galaxy II before flying to San Diego to play United.

Mullin’s injury was shortly followed by two goals, the first of which came from Elliot Lee, who became the first player this preseason to score against United, before Aaron Hayden added a second. Marc Jurado cut the deficit in half just before halftime, but Dan Gore was sent off shortly after for another violent challenge.

Despite the fact that no first-team players were present, Wrexham prevailed 3-1 to inflict United their first pre-season defeat. United won without conceding a goal and will play Real Madrid in Houston just 24 hours later.
