While at Celtic, the French striker spoke out about supposed death threats from Rangers fans.

Moussa Dembele, a former Celtic player, claims he got death threats from Rangers fans ahead to the Old Firm rivalry.

The former Hoops striker had a successful tenure in Glasgow under Brendan Rodgers, scoring a hat-trick against their bitter rivals in his debut in the famous derby. Dembele went on to score at Ibrox and win back-to-back Trebles for Celtic before joining Lyon in his hometown. Dembele now plays for Al-Ettifaq, managed by former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, and says his move from the Rhone club was difficult.

In a forthright interview after leaving for Saudi Arabia, the 27-year-old also revealed that he received death threats while playing for the Hoops. “In football, as in life, when you feel appreciated and supported, you are better,” he explained to Foot Mercato. Hostility does not frighten me when it comes from the opposition.

“I’d even go so far as to say it stimulates me.” I received death threats from Rangers fans before the Glasgow derbies, but it didn’t stop me from doing my job.

“However, when the hostility comes from your own supporters and turns into hatred, it’s a different story.” My final season in Lyon was challenging. Despite the roadblocks set in my path by management, I was off to a solid start. I acknowledge that I could have done better. That was not the case, though. “My services are clear and objective to me.”
