Sunderland announce Elliot Embleton surgery following injury at Derby County

Sunderland has announced that Elliot Embleton will have surgery after a thigh injury acquired while on loan at Derby County.

The midfielder experienced the issue when attempting to take a corner and left a training session last Friday. The athlete is currently back in the north east, and scans have since shown that he has a tear.

The midfielder, who has just recently returned from an eight-month absence due to a broken ankle, now faces the possibility of spending yet another extended stint on the sidelines after Sunderland announced that he will undergo surgery. Elliott Embleton, who was on loan at Derby County until he had a thigh injury, has returned to the Academy of Light, the team said.

Max Bird returns in the Derby starting lineup against Cambridge, and there are defensive changes.

In order to continue his recovery from an ankle injury suffered in December 2022, the 24-year-old recently finished a season-long loan move to Pride Park Stadium. Embleton, who played for the Rams twice, will now regrettably have to spend further time on the sidelines as he must have surgery before finishing his recovery on Wearside. Everyone at SAFC wishes Elliot a quick recovery.

Derby head coach Paul Warne discussed the issue yesterday. “I knew it was severe last Friday because I went into the doctor’s room where he was laying down,” he added. “He was sobbing. I tapped him and apologised, but he didn’t remember me entering the space because, God bless him, he was in such a terrible place.

“He had the scan, and the damage is significant. He probably needs surgery to be fixed. Tuesday, he came in to say goodbye to everyone, so I saw him in the parking lot. He will resume his rehabilitation in Sunderland since he will be out of commission for a while.

“He was just crushed, and I believe people understand how much of an honour it is to play football, but you put so much work and dedication into it every day. He was extremely happy about working so hard to recover from the other injury, progressing so far in his rehab, playing time, playing time with the first team, and developing his own style of play.

“It is painful for him to have something taken away from him once more in a freak accident. I gave him a hug and felt bad for him in the parking lot. I hope our careers cross again soon.
