Coventry City will be missing five first-team players when they face Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday.
Jon Dahl Tomasson’s squad travel to the Coventry Building Society Arena hoping to snap a three-game losing streak in the Championship.Rovers must tighten things after conceding 16 goals in five games.
The Rovers defense could change as Tomasson wants to shake things up with three games in six days for his squad. Due to an injury, Aysnley Pears is almost guaranteed to miss both matches.
After the Rovers’ number one was forced off with an ankle injury, Leopold Walhstedt will fill in. In his pre-match press conference this evening, Tomasson will provide a more complete report on Pears’ situation.
Rovers have been plagued by injuries this season. Long-term injuries have sidelined Sam Barnes, Sam Gallagher, and Ryan Hedges. Harry Leonard and Naill Ennis are also out until after the international break, leaving them short on attacking options.
Coventry are dealing with their own injury issues. Kasey Palmer, Ben Sheaf, and Milan van Ewijk are all expected to miss six to eight weeks.
Palmer and Sheaf have both had abductor injuries, while Van Ewijk has damaged a quad muscle. Mark Robins is also without long-term absentees Callum O’Hare and Fabio Tavares.
O’Hare has returned to full contact training after missing nine months due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The game comes too soon for him, with Under-21s fixtures following shortly to ease him back into match action.
Coventry had been under some pressure heading into the weekend’s games after a six-game winless streak, but they halted it with a 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers.
After a rough stretch in front of goal, striker Ellis Simms grabbed his first goals of the season. Manager Robins was pleased with the club’s summer addition, whom he felt was overthinking his game in an attempt to score.
“Ellis was perhaps trying too hard, he was snatching at things against good defenders,” Robins stated. “They have good players on their team, and there’s no doubt that we can hurt teams.”
“It’s difficult because we have lost players but we have players coming back from injury, like Jamie, and that gave us enough to win this game.”
