As the playoffs approach, the Rangers’ Max Scherzer provided a heartbreaking injury update

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer is projected to miss the rest of the 2023 season due to a strained teres major. The announcement comes after he left the Rangers’ most recent game against the Toronto Blue Jays with an apparent ailment.

Scherzer has not been formally ruled out of the playoffs, but according to Passan, GM Chris Young has claimed Scherzer is “unlikely” to pitch in the postseason.

Rangers: Max Scherzer is anticipated to miss the rest of the season due to an injury.

The Rangers acquired Scherzer prior to the trade deadline. The right-hander was part of the New York Mets’ fire sale, which also included the trade of Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros.

Texas needed a consistent ace for the postseason. The Rangers’ pitching performed admirably early in the season, but began to falter in July. As a result, Chris Young and the Rangers agreed to the transfer.

Max Scherzer, who had previously thrown to a 4.01 ERA with the Mets, improved as a result of the trade. Across eight starts with Texas, Scherzer recorded a much-improved 3.20 ERA.

The Rangers will now rely heavily on the rest of their rotation to perform admirably. Texas possesses other talented arms, but consistency has been a concern for the pitching staff. However, their bullpen has been their biggest weakness.

Texas is currently in contention for a playoff position. In the AL West, they are only one game behind the Houston Astros. Texas is also the second AL Wild Card team. There are four teams contending for three AL Wild Card places, while three teams are vying for the AL West.

In other words, despite the Rangers’ current advantageous standings, making the playoffs will be difficult. And losing Max Scherzer will hardly improve matters.
