For weeks, Mark Robins had avoided using Joel Latibeaudiere in a holding midfield position, but when the summer acquisition played the final 20 or so minutes, he decided it was time to give the position a go. Ben Sheaf and Liam Kelly’s injuries required him to act, and Jamie Allen was filling in. Jamie Allen, who had just recently fully recovered from his summer heart issue, started to wane in his third game in eight days.

Although he originally switched places with Liam Kitching in the back three, the center-half advanced into the middle of the field a few minutes later when Luis Binks entered the game in place of Allen as City was attempting to score a tying goal. The manager of the former Swansea player acknowledged that the former Swansea player performed admirably in front of the back three, saying, “We have spoken about Joel in that position, but I put him on at the left side of the three and then changed that again, a two step change, and he actually did pretty well in there (in midfield).” When we were in control, it was nice to watch it unfold live and realize that he was up to the task.

Fans had been discussing it for weeks, but Robins eventually took the risk by starting Haji Wright and Ellis Simms up front. In the previous 10 games, Matty Godden had either been paired with one or the other. This dynamic works because Godden has terrific mobility and a lot of energy, and he especially presses forward to create mistakes in the final third, which is a nice compliment to a more physically gifted front man.

The two big boys performed rather well and posed a threat to Norwich in a combination that obviously needs some improvement. During one first-half attack, Wright broke away and urgently attempted to feed Simms, but a defender blocked the pass’s angle. However, it seemed like City needed Godden’s pressivity to prevent the opposition from playing out from the back. The striker provided a little extra energy when he entered the game as one of three substitutions in the 71st minute.

Considering the sum City paid for the pair, it is safe to say that their partnership is still very much a work in progress. Nevertheless, the manager simply cannot afford to neglect them as the front two given this.

The most serious complaint that could be leveled against Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, who made a rare start for the Sky Blues, is that he appeared to lack the self-assurance to challenge his opponent. Fans of the Sky Blues were familiar with their opponent, former City wing-back Sam McCallum.
