The Pittsburgh Steelers talked about Joey Porter Jr.’s prognosis.
Pittsboro, PA This past weekend, Joey Porter Jr. received his first taste of playing lengthy time from the Pittsburgh Steelers, and there’s a notion that this will continue going forward.
As a rookie, Porter has been a slow riser for the Steelers; prior to the Baltimore game, he played nearly exclusively as a dime package. However, during the bye week, it might be time to increase his playing time after a game-winning interception against Lamar Jackson and Odell Beckham Jr.
“This may be my first time saying this, but he really did everything well on that play,” Brown stated. “You turn around and examine his gait. Please return to his pre-snap photo. He exuded confidence in every way. That was a very significant occasion. His demeanor when breaking the huddle shows that he was completely confident in his ability to make the play.
“He was well aligned. He finished by grabbing the ball, demonstrating his excellent footwork and what we had been aiming for.”
After the bye, Brown wouldn’t commit to Porter as a starter but kept the door open for a potential substitution.
Brown declared, “Whoever is playing well will start.” That’s the objective. Joey had a strong finish to the game. Let’s see if he gets going. The question is: Are you writing the plays that need to be written? I don’t think it matters who goes first. Who is out there and how well they are playing affects when they are tossing the ball.”
Porter, Levi Wallace, and Patrick Peterson might make up the Steelers’ outer three-cornerback rotation. And based on what the youngster has demonstrated, Pittsburgh’s defense may be able to develop another weapon from it.
“That play had to be made,” Brown stated. “He needed that play to be made to show he’s doing the right things and going in the right direction.”
