The Miami Dolphins’ turnover margin, which acts as an equalizer against inferior opponents, remains an issue.

MIAMI GARDENS — Among all the significant numbers related to the Miami Dolphins this season — a 4-1 record, most yards in NFL history through five games (2,568), quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has only been sacked six times, etc — there’s one that’s especially meaningful to coach Mike McDaniel.

And it’s not good.

The Dolphins are minus-3 in turnover margin, tied for 22nd in the league.

McDaniel, whose team has lost the turnover battle in three of its five games this season, regards turnover margin among the game’s most important factors when it comes to winning or losing. He stated that last season after the Minnesota loss, a game in which the Dolphins were minus-3 in turnover margin.

“The number one indicator in wins and losses has been, and forever always will be, turnovers,” he said, later adding, “… if you’re trying to win more than you lose in this league, you’d better be on the plus side, and that’s just a fact.”

Being on the wrong side of the turnover margin is something that could bring this high-scoring, potentially record-setting offense to a grinding halt.

Last year the Dolphins finished tied for 29th in the league in giveaway/takeaway margin at minus-7.

Under McDaniel they’re minus-10 in 22 regular-season games.

They have a 13-9 record in those games.
