Residents demand action over ‘nightmare’ stretch of A46 after fatal crash

Desperate calls to improve road safety have intensified after two more crashes, one proving fatal, happened on a notorious section of the A46. A young motorist died after his car was involved in a collision on the ‘Stratford stretch’, between the A422 for Stratford-upon-Avon and the A435 for Alcester, at about 10pm on Friday, October 13.

A second smash happened on the same stretch of road almost exactly 24 hours later. That particular section of the road is widely considered to be especially dangerous and has been the subject of countless serious collisions in recent years. The A46 where it meets the A422 at the start of the notorious 'Stratford section' ending at the A4335 junction

The latest crashes have prompted a fresh wave of calls for measures to make the road safer. “That road needs some serious intervention,” one person said in response a Warwickshire Police post on Facebook.

“It’s an absolute nightmare to get out of this junction, you take your life in your hands,” a second observer wrote. “Something needs to be done asap.”

“So many accidents on one bit of road that’s no more than six miles long between the two islands,” another said. “Maybe reduce the speed (and) add average speed cameras between the two islands.”

Road safety campaigner Sam Reading-East said the accidents only strengthened the arguments he has made about this part of the A46 for a decade.

A speed restriction of 30mph was proposed by several people to better deal with an added volume of traffic passing through that stretch. “Long term it must be a roundabout to save lives,” one advocate added. “Only locals know how dangerous it is.”
