Jack Ginnivan has found a new home at Waverley Park after becoming a premiership player for Collingwood in 2023.
Since his debut in 2021, the 20-year-old has appeared in 42 games for Collingwood.
Despite breaking into Craig McRae’s starting lineup in 2022, Ginnivan appeared in just 14 games in 2023, mostly as a tactical substitute.
The trade, which had been widely unexpected until Tuesday’s developments, became official later that afternoon.
In addition to Ginnivan, the Hawks and the Lightning have traded second-round picks this year, as well as future second and third-round picks.
Ginnivan’s time at Collingwood was a rollercoaster. In between the flashy goals and evasive skills, the forward received early-career attention regarding high-tackle free kicks and was later suspended for using illicit substances.
With Collingwood signing Lachie Schultz, it was expected that he would take over for Ginnivan, limiting his playing time with the Magpies once more. On Tuesday, it was reported that a trade between the Pies and Hawks could take place before Wednesday’s trading deadline.
Before Schultz arrived, Ginnivan had to compete with Bobby Hill, Jamie Elliott, and Beau McCreery for a position in McRae’s lineup.
With Tyler Brockman departing for West Coast and the Hawks missing out on now-Saint Liam Henry, Hawthorn appeared to be on the hunt for another small forward.
The trade deadline is set for 7:30 PM (AEDT) on Wednesday, with AFL House slated to begin announcing official deals from 2:00 PM (AEDT).
