Two of the Michigan Wolverines’ key players discuss this.

A list of Michigan’s 25 key players for the 2023 season
The top 25 players for the Wolverines this season are being counted down.

The highly anticipated 2023 season for the Michigan football team is now only 50 days away after a lengthy offseason! We’re also listing the top 25 Wolverines players for the season to help fans get ready.

This countdown looks at which players’ positions will have the largest impact on the Wolverines’ season, with votes from fans and media members combined. This list looks at the players who are most important to the Wolverines’ success rather than just ranking Michigan’s best players. It does this by combining established roles, breakout potential, and positional depth and needs.

Barnhart, who started at right tackle for Michigan for the final nine games of the previous season, is competing against a quality field of players for a starting tackle job. The rugged and reliable product of Paw Paw, Michigan, is starting his fifth season after making starts at four different offensive line spots.

Jim Harbaugh has referred to 6-foot-3, 356-pound defensive tackle Grant as a “gift from the football gods” because of his exceptional speed relative to his bulk. He will attempt to be a versatile player who can attract double teams while providing a strong run stopper for Michigan’s defensive line.

Turner, a kicker by trade, completed 20 of 22 field goals tries for Louisville in the previous campaign. Returning to Washtenaw County as a graduate transfer, the native of Saline, Michigan, plans to attempt to assume the role vacated by All-American Jake Moody.

Harrell, who started 12 games at edge last season, is now the veteran of the deep edge room. He has a track record of stopping runs, and he started to display greater pass-rush last autumn. As a senior, is he going to explode even more?

Following four seasons of positional switching, Barrett seemed completely comfortable playing linebacker for WILL last autumn. This autumn, he will add years of defensive and special teams expertise to the club. He made multiple plays that caused chaos and finished second on the team in tackles.

Hausmann, a former three-star recruit, performed admirably in his Nebraska freshman year. At 6 feet 2 inches and 220 pounds, he was the eighth-ranked rookie power-five defender with 54 tackles, including 10 in a Michigan game and his first-ever sack. In the end, he started seven games for Nebraska and became the fifth true freshman linebacker to start a game for the Huskers in the previous thirty seasons.

He transferred to Michigan after the season, drawing interest from Iowa, Ohio State, and other schools. The portal evaluation committee at 247Sports ranked him in the top five and awarded him a 96 Transfer Portal rating.

Hausmann still has to prove he deserves a starting position with the Wolverines despite his high ranking from 247Sports. While Michael Barrett will compete with Hausmann for snaps at the WILL position, Junior Colson is a lock to start at the MIKE position. Hausmann can improve his game between his freshman and sophomore years because he is bigger and supposedly faster than Barrett, but Barrett has also started 13 more games and participated in 37 more games than the incoming sophomore.

Hausmann ought to get a lot of action for the Wolverines in 2023, whether or not he starts. He provides Michigan with some much-needed depth and variety at linebacker. He has a nice combination of size, speed, physicality, and lineup adaptability.
