Chicago Cubs expected to pursue Juan Soto trade this offseason

The Chicago Cubs are anticipated to have a busy summer after missing the playoffs each of the last three years, and one MLB insider believes the Cubs may even be engaged in a Juan Soto deal.

Sources close to the issue have told Bruce Levine of 670 The Score that the Cubs will try to move Soto this winter.

Talks are likely to heat up following the World Series, during the forthcoming November 7 winter meetings attended by all MLB general managers.

Soto, 25, is a three-time All-Star who would immediately add power to the center of the Cubs’ lineup. They’d have to work out a long-term deal with the great slugger, who is eligible for arbitration this offseason but will be a free agency in 2025.

Regardless of the potential cost, the temptation of adding a hitter with a career OPS of.946 has to be appealing.

The Padres, who are looking to decrease club payroll, could see value in dumping Soto for another large trade return, but the Cubs aren’t the only team interested in the power-hitting outfielder.

MLB.com ranked the Cubs’ farm system as the fourth-best during the midpoint of the regular season, implying that they have enough excellent prospects to pull off a blockbuster trade for Soto. Outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, who is only 21 years old but rated as baseball’s 12th top prospect, is among Chicago’s prospects. The Cubs have six prospects ranked among the top 100 by MLB.com.

While the Cubs have plenty of ammunition for a potential Soto deal, there will be plenty of opportunity to improve.
