Iowa’s Cooper DeJean and Joe Evans Nominated for Awards

(Iowa City, IA) – Iowa Hawkeyes Cooper DeJean and Joe Evans have continued to make headlines with multiple awards. This week, DeJean was named as a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given to the nation’s best defensive back. Joe Evans has been named as a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy which is given to the most outstanding former walk-on in college football.

Cooper DeJean is just one of 15 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award and is one of two players from the Big Ten named as a nominee. The other player nominated is Ohio State’s Denzel Burke. DeJean is fourth on the team with 38 tackles, three pass break-ups, and two interceptions. This season, DeJean ranks 14th nationally while averaging 12.3 yards per punt return, and is second nationally in punt return touchdowns.

Joe Evans is one of 73 players who have been nominated for the Trophy this season across Division I football. In order to receive this award, you need to not only be an exceptional athlete on the field but also be on the team without receiving any financial aid from the University’s athletic department.

Iowa will take on Northwestern this upcoming Saturday, with the opening kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
