Washington Commanders Roster Moves: Two players signed on defense

The Washington Commanders announced two roster moves after today’s practice. The team has signed LB Jabril Cox and DB Tariq Castro-Fields from the practice squad. Both players have been elevated for game days over the last few weeks for special teams snaps.

Washington didn’t announce any roster moves for the team’s 16-man practice squad. They had two open roster spots after trading DEs Montez Sweat(Bears) and Chase Young(49ers) at Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

Washington could also be placing rookie OL Ricky Stromberg on injured reserve soon. He suffered a knee injury vs the Eagles last week, and was on crutches. He’s already been ruled out of the Patriots game on Sunday.

The Bears have acquired pass rusher Montez Sweat from the Commanders in exchange for a second-round pick.

The Chicago Bears have acquired edge rusher Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2024, which should be a significant improvement for the team’s abysmal pass rush.

The Bears now have a 27-year-old disruptive defender with a track record of consistent output. He has 6 1/2 sacks this season and 35 1/2 sacks and 197 tackles since Washington selected him with the 26th overall in 2019.

The 2-6 Bears have 10 sacks, which is a league low. Nobody other has fewer than 15.

“Montez is a huge addition to our team,” Bears general manager Ryan Poles said after trading a second-round pick for the second time in two years following an ill-fated trade with Pittsburgh for receiver Chase Claypool in 2022. “He is not only a great player, but also a great person.” We anticipate him to contribute to the improvement of our defense.”

Sweat is in the final year of his rookie deal and appears to be ready for a huge salary in free agency, whether with the Bears or elsewhere. After the front management spent large money on defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Darryl Payne, his future in Washington looked bleak.

Trading Young rather than signing him to a long-term contract demonstrates the organization’s dedication to collecting draft selections for future success, even if coach Ron Rivera, general manager Martin Mayhew, and many of those currently in the front office will not be around to employ them.

Young was selected second overall by Washington in 2020, and he had 7 1/2 sacks in his first pro season to earn Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Young, a local kid, appeared to be the franchise’s face, but he struggled early in 2021 after skipping some offseason training and had only 1 1/2 sacks in his first eight games.

Young tore the ACL in his right knee on November 14, 2021, and did not play again until Christmas Eve 2022, after a more extensive than expected surgery and lengthy recovery. The organization declined his fifth-year option, allowing him to become a free agency following this season.

Young was finally starting to produce again after a neck injury in exhibition play slowed his return to form and prompted him to miss Week 1. Despite his five sacks, the defensive line was not the unit’s strength, and Rivera said Monday that the group was “not consistently enough” living up to expectations.

Sweat and Young were constantly asked about the prospect that their 38-31 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday was their final game together. Sweat stated that his agent will keep him updated on any trade talks.

“Anything can happen, but I can only control what I can,” stated Sweat. “Yeah, that thought goes across your mind, but you hate to think like that.”

Rivera, in his fourth season as head coach of the Washington Redskins, declined to address anything linked to the trade deadline, including who would move into a starting role if Sweat or Young were no longer available. That will almost certainly be veteran Casey Toohill, who has four sacks this season.
