A clear and troubling injury update for the Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY — An injury forced junior tight end Luke Lachey out of the Hawkeyes win over Western Michigan in the first quarter on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz provided an update on Lachey’s injury and said it was “most likely” a season-ending injury.

“I feel most badly for him,” Ferentz said. “He is the person most affected. Just an unfortunate development, but he will be fine here in time. But it is a significant injury, so he is going to be out for quite a while.”

Ferentz noted that Lachey underwent surgery on the injury on Tuesday.

Lachey proved to be Iowa’s most reliable option in the passing game through the first two weeks of the season.

The junior tight end followed a 28-reception, 398-yard season, during which he led Iowa with four receiving touchdowns, in 2022 by becoming quarterback Cade McNamara’s safety blanket.

The former Michigan transfer looked Lachey’s way 16 times in Iowa’s wins over Utah State and Iowa State to begin the 2023 season. The Columbus, Ohio-product responded with 10 receptions for 131 yards. Though he did not find the end zone, Lachey led the Hawkeyes in catches and yards through two weeks.
