The Cleveland Browns have struggled at quarterback this season, especially since quarterback Deshaun Watson was sidelined with a shoulder injury. This week, the Browns started rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who threw for 165 yards and an interception in a 13-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. They clearly need a seasoned quarterback under center to keep their momentum going, and the team just signed a Super Bowl champion quarterback to help them out on Sunday night.
Cleveland has added experienced quarterback Joe Flacco to their practice squad in order to supplement their quarterback rotation. Flacco recently worked out with the organization, but no details on how it went or whether the Browns were interested in signing him were divulged. We now know that he will join the team’s practice squad and could play for Cleveland soon.
Flacco won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens against the San Francisco 49ers in 2012. He subsequently spent one year with the Denver Broncos before joining the New York Jets from 2020 to 2022. He has been a free agent for the entire season and will attempt to bring in some aid.
The veteran quarterback has completed 42,320 passes for 42,320 yards and 232 touchdowns. He is 38 years old and nearing the conclusion of his NFL career. Depending on how he performs in Cleveland, he could be a solid backup option for the team next season when Watson returns.
After their win on Sunday, Cleveland improved to 7-3 and now holds sole ownership of second place in the highly competitive AFC North division. They will go to Denver next week to face the Broncos, who have been on a roll lately. We’ll see if Thompson-Robinson remains the starter or if Flacco is activated to the active roster to see what he can do.
