A Jacksonville Jaguars great player has suffered a fatal injury and

The Jacksonville Jaguars had their five-game winning streak snapped during Sunday’s surprising 34-3 blowout loss to the visiting San Francisco 49ers.

Part of why they struggled in that game was due to the absence of starting CB Tyson Campbell for most of the second half.

Campbell, who originally got hurt during Week 6’s win over the visiting Indianapolis Colts, missed the next two games (road wins against the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers) and has not had a full practice since Oct. 13.

He played in 32 of the team’s 62 defensive snaps (52%) on Sunday and was replaced by second-year CB Gregory Junior (hamstring), who was activated off injured reserve (IR) last Saturday.

Junior, a sixth-round pick out of Division II Ouachita Baptist, got hurt early during Week 1’s win over the Colts and was placed on IR in Week 2. He entered into a 21-day practice window in Week 7.

Junior was a surprise draft pick because of the school he played at, but a personnel source said one of the biggest reasons why he got drafted was his participation in Senior Bowl week. He had “intriguing tape,” which kind of put “him on the map.”

CB Montaric “Buster” Brown, a 2022 seventh-round pick, started for Campbell in
Weeks 7 and 8, but he was a healthy inactive against the 49ers.

From talking to personnel sources about Campbell, you can make the case that he was Jacksonville’s most impressive defensive player in training camp. And while he wasn’t named to the Pro Bowl last season, Campbell was off to an impressive start this season before his injury, which a source is believed to be to his right hamstring.

“Tyson has the same injury that he had. He just felt it grab in the game; he’s kind of day-to-day right now,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said Monday about Campbell’s injury.

“He felt OK today, but he’s got a couple of days here before we get back on the field on Wednesday. I’m assuming we’ll probably limit him a little bit this week and just see where he’s at the end of the week.”

Offensively, the Jaguars have a major concern in wide receiver Zay Jones, who was arrested Monday evening on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge. Few details about the incident that led to Jones’ arrest were available at the time of publication; Jones’ initial court appearance is Tuesday morning

Prior to these new legal issues, Jones, who has been a key part of their passing game ever since signed with the team in March 2022, has missed six games due to a lingering knee injury, which he first suffered during Week 2’s loss to the visiting Kansas City Chiefs.

He posted a career-high 82 receptions last season, and a source said his ability to play multiple receiver spots was a big reason why the Jaguars signed him to a three-year, $24 million contract with $14 million fully guaranteed.

However, he became a backup this season due to the acquisition of former Falcons first-round WR Calvin Ridley, who was acquired at the trade deadline in November 2022. But with Jacksonville preferring to use a lot of three-receiver sets, Jones is integral to that alignment, and the coaches have yet to find an adequate replacement for him.

The Jaguars (6-3), who still remain in first place in the AFC South now by just a game over the surprising Houston Texans (5-4), will play the visiting Tennessee Titans (3-6) on Sunday.
