A number of scholarship athletes have entered the transfer portal for the Minnesota Gophers. So far, only one of them, QB Athan Kaliakmanis, has started in 2023. Another key player, running back Zach Evans, revealed his desire to transfer on Thursday morning.
The redshirt freshman from Heath, Texas, began the season toward the bottom of the list of running backs expected to see a lot of carries in 2023. However, a fumbling issue from transfer Sean Tyler, as well as injuries to rookie sensation Darius Taylor, thrust Evans into the spotlight.
Zach took advantage of opportunities in several games, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown against Louisiana.
