NEWS FLASH: The Detroit Lions have officially designated a rookie quarterback to return.

BREAKING: The Detroit Lions have officially designated a rookie quarterback to return; a 21-day practice window has been opened.

The Detroit Lions made a roster move on Wednesday to fortify its quarterback room. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Lions have opened the practice window for quarterback Hendon Hooker.

Hooker was taken by Detroit in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Hooker tore his ACL in November at Tennessee, forcing him to start the season on the NFI list. The Lions now have 21 days to activate Hooker to the active roster.

The Lions selected Hendon Hooker 68th overall.
Hendon Hooker, a third-round choice in last year’s draft, was a standout for the Tennessee Volunteers during his final two seasons in college. During that time, the six-foot-four signal-caller threw 58 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also completed 69% of his passes while receiving votes for the Heisman Trophy in 2022. Hooker, on the other hand, tore his ACL in a game against the South Carolina Gamecocks in mid-November. Before leaving, he threw three touchdown passes.

Quarterback Depth Chart for the Detroit Lions
On the depth chart for the Lions, Hendon Hooker will be positioned below quarterbacks Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater, who signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the team last August, should remain the clear backup. During his nine-year NFL career, the one-time Pro Bowler has passed for 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.

Meanwhile, Goff remains one of the NFC’s finest quarterbacks. In 11 games, Goff has passed for 3,075 yards, 18 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2022 after throwing 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Goff joined the Detroit Lions in 2021 after spending five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. If anything happened to Goff or Bridgewater, Hooker would jump up the depth chart.
