According to reports, he could be an intriguing choice for the Panthers’ head coaching position.

It has been widely reported that Jim Harbaugh could be a candidate for the Panthers’ vacant head coaching job. He met with David Tepper last offseason, and rumors resurfaced days after Frank Reich was fired.

Harbaugh, the current head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, has proven successful at the NFL level during his tenure coaching the San Francisco 49ers. He took the Bay Area franchise to three straight NFC Championship games from 2011-13 with a Super Bowl appearance in 2012.

His name was gaining steam as an option for Carolina amongst fans, but that steam may soon come to a screeching halt.

It has been reported on Thursday that Harbaugh is nearing a monster extension to continue as the head coach at Michigan. Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel and Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson have both said that Harbaugh and the University of Michigan are close to agreement on a 5-year, $55 million extension to keep him in charge of Big Blue.

Johnson also reported than an extension is contingent on Harbaugh not pursuing a job with an NFL team this offseason, which obviously means he would not formally interview in Carolina.
