His $95 million extension with Michigan could be jeopardized.

In just his second season coaching Michigan State, Mel Tucker was arguably the hottest name on the market.

It was the fall of 2021 and, en route to guiding the Spartans to the biggest single-season turnaround in program history, he was reportedly generating interest from other schools and the NFL.

That led to Michigan State making a massive financial commitment and signing Tucker to a 10-year, $95 million contract extension

Less than two years later, Tucker and the school are now embroiled in controversy and it’s unclear if he will coach another game for the Spartans. Early Sunday morning, just hours after Michigan State rolled to a 45-14 win against Richmond, USA TODAY published a lengthy report in which Tucker is accused of sexual harassment by rape survivor and activist Brenda Tracy. Accounts from the two vary but the report includes a statement in which Tucker admits to masturbating during a phone call with her.. The announcement came with statements of gratitude from Tucker and praise from university leaders for the rising star who was suddenly one of the highest paid coaches in the country.

This is obviously a horrible look for Tucker and Michigan State, which has an ugly history with sexual assault incidents in recent years. He could also stand to lose a ton of money if the university decides to cut ties with the coach now in his fourth season leading the program.

Tucker’s highly-publicized contract extension is fully guaranteed and Michigan State owes him every dime unless he’s fired for cause – and that has nothing to do with wins and losses. The 12-page agreement includes a few outs for the university, including if Tucker is convicted of a crime. There’s also a clause that states Michigan State can scrap the deal and get off the hook for all the remaining money if he “engages in any conduct which constitutes moral turpitude or which, in the university’s reasonable judgment, would tend to bring public disrespect, contempt or ridicule” to the school.

In short, there’s about $80 million left on Tucker’s contract that’s in limbo. Michigan State released a statement early Sunday morning saying the university doesn’t comment on potential investigations. Interim president Teresa Woodruff and athletic director Alan Haller are scheduled to have a press conference at 5 p.m. Sunday to “provide an update on the football program.”
