On Thursday, the Cleveland Browns signed quarterback Joe Flacco to a potentially lucrative one-year contract extension, securing his spot on the active roster for the remainder of the season.
However, Flacco expressed a desire to play next season shortly after his new contract was announced.
“I know I want to play,” Flacco said on Thursday, December 14th, when asked if he should wait until January to see what the future holds. “Me wanting to play is not in question.”
The deal for Flacco could be very profitable. He’ll earn $75,000 per win for the rest of the regular season, with additional incentives worth up to $4.05 million. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, all of those incentives are based on winning.
“Should Cleveland advance to the postseason, Flacco would make $250,000 for a wild-card win, $500,000 for a divisional-playoff win, $1 million for an AFC Championship game win and $2 million for a Super Bowl win,” Schefter wrote. “The deal expires after this season when, once again, Flacco will be a free agent.”
After the season, the Browns will have to see how he fits into their plans for next year. Deshaun Watson, the Browns’ $230 million quarterback investment, is expected to be ready for the start of the season following a season-ending shoulder injury. Cleveland has also stated that rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson will be developed as a future option.
If Flacco leads the injury-plagued Browns to the playoffs and wins games, it will be difficult not to bring back the 38-year-old quarterback, at least as a capable backup option.
Joe Flacco’s Agent Announces a Contract With the Browns
Flacco was signed to the practice squad at first and was promoted twice to start for the Browns. Following Sunday’s victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland named him the starter for the rest of the season. Flacco’s signing to the 53-man roster was only a matter of time.
JL Sports, Flacco’s agency, first announced the deal on social media.
“Congrats to our client, Joe Flacco, on signing with the Browns on a one-year deal,” the statement read.
The move puts an end to rumors that another team might sign him off the practice squad, which became a storyline this week. Flacco has thrown 89 passes for 565 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in his first two games. The Browns have a 1-0 record in

Flacco’s career was almost over when the Browns called in November. He sat at home for nearly three months without a team. Flacco wants to make the most of his opportunity now that he’s back and playing well.
“I love the game,” Flacco told Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “I still feel like I can play the game, so you know, I feel like I owe it to myself.” I put in all of this effort. My age is 38 years. I’ve got the rest of my life ahead of me, and I’m going to play football for as long as I can. It’s something unique. And, as I previously stated, I believe the most important aspect of this is that I have people around me who believe in me and want me to succeed. They believe I can and should do it as well. I consider myself extremely fortunate as a result.”
