The Phillies should consider one trade candidate from each NL Central team.

After kicking off the offseason with a massive free agent re-signing of starting pitcher Aaron Nola, the Philadelphia Phillies have been relatively quiet in terms of major transactions in recent weeks. With a few roster holes to fill, including the pursuit of a potential flexible outfielder and some bullpen help, the Phillies may opt to address their remaining needs through trade.

If so, what potential trade candidates could be found from the NL Central division that would help the Phillies fill those needs? Here’s one prime candidate from each team that the ballclub should consider acquiring to augment their roster.

Alexis Daz, reliever, Cincinnati Reds

After losing closer Craig Kimbrel to the Orioles in free agency, one of the Phillies’ top priorities this offseason is to bolster their bullpen. What better way to fill that void than to pursue Cincinnati Reds closer Alexis Daz, who is eight years younger and about to enter his prime?

Daz had a strong rookie season in 2022, finishing fifth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting and putting up strong numbers all around. During his rookie season, Daz went 7-3 with a 1.84 ERA and 0.96 WHIP, allowing only 13 earned runs and striking out 83 batters in 63 2/3 innings in 59 appearances.

Daz followed it up with a solid All-Star season for the Reds in 2023, posting a 9-6 record with a 3.07 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, as well as 86 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings of work. With an ERA+ close to 180 and a strikeout rate above 30% over the last two years, he has established himself among the league’s best.

With the Reds looking to be headed for another rebuilding season with a roster full of young players, the Phillies may be able to pry Daz off their roster and make him their own for the 2024 season.
