University of Michigan president discusses Wolverine football scandal

The University of Michigan football team is preparing to play the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game this weekend after defeating Ohio State. Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, will be back on the sidelines on game day after serving a three-game sideline ban imposed by the Big Ten over a sign-stealing scandal.

While the Big Ten investigation has concluded, an NCAA investigation is still ongoing. University of Michigan President Santa Ono stated at the Detroit Economic Club (DEC) that he takes the matter seriously.

“This is an academic institution, to be frank,” said Ono. “Ethics and integrity are central and core to what we do — it’s a cornerstone to a great university.”

While the Big Ten investigation is now complete, the NCAA investigation is still ongoing. President Santa Ono of the University of Michigan stated at the Detroit Economic Club (DEC) that he takes the matter seriously.

“This is an academic institution, to be frank,” Ono said. “Ethics and integrity are central and core to what we do — it’s a cornerstone to a great university.”

“Coach has talked to me about that situation and has said that he knows nothing about what happened, and I trust him,” Ono said. “He’s a man of honor – everyone who knows him knows that.”

According to NCAA rules, it is a coach’s responsibility to maintain a culture of compliance. The NCAA can still punish Michigan football, regardless of whether Harbaugh was aware of the sign theft.

Ono says he hopes Jim Harbaugh will be the school’s football coach next year, but he doesn’t guarantee it.

“We have to wait and see what happens with all these investigations,” Ono said. “He is a great coach and means a lot to the institution.”
