There is some very sad news to report from the SEC world on Sunday as one of the more famous and beloved players in Auburn Tigers football history, tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, died in an automobile accident early Sunday morning.
Auburn’s 247 Sports site, Auburn Undercover, was the first to report the shocking news.
Lutzenkirchen was a pivotal member of the 2010 Auburn team that would go on to win the national championship by defeating the Oregon Ducks under the direction his quarterback, and friend, Cam Newton.During his career on the Plains, Lutzenkirchen caught 59 passes for 628 yards and 14 touchdowns. His career, sadly, came to an abrupt end in 2012 when he sustained a hip injury during the SEC regular season.
He would go on to sign a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams, however he was released as the injury to the hip continued to linger.
Just 23-years-old, this is news that you never want to hear and the Auburn community has to be stunned, again, especially considering the fact that he was one of the biggest fan favorites of one of the most rabid fan bases in all of sports.
