Breaking news: 49ers Working To Land $78 Million ‘Dominant’ Run-Stopper

The 49ers have the best roster in the NFL and they keep adding to it.

On Tuesday, they signed veteran defensive back Logan Ryan, according to The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Ryan has played for the Patriots, the Titans, the Giants and the Buccaneers, and has started 121 games in his career, including six games last year, although he probably won’t start for the 49ers barring injury.

The 49ers just blew out the Eagles and currently seem to have no weaknesses, but teams always need depth, and the 49ers need it at safety. In the past few weeks, they’ve lost starting strong safety Talanoa Hufanga to a torn ACL and backup safety George Odum with a torn bicep. Which means Ryan will become the 49ers’ primary backup safety.

In addition, Ryan has experience playing cornerback. Which means he can be the 49ers’ primary defensive back off the bench at practically every position. Think of him as the 49ers’ new version of Jimmie Ward, who played safety, nickelback and cornerback at various times during his 49ers tenure. Plus Ryan’s experience will be invaluable for the 49ers, considering he won a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2016, and they haven’t won one yet. They could use more players with championship pedigree.

Ryan wasn’t on an NFL roster this season until now, which should mean he’s healthy and rested if the 49ers ever need him to contribute. And even if he doesn’t contribute, he should help the younger defensive backs prepare for the playoffs.
