Michigan basketball is just 6-9 this season, with a 1-3 Big Ten record. Head coach Juwan Howard was away from the program to recover from heart surgery, but since his return, things have not improved. A key member of the Wolverines is now reportedly dealing with off-court issues as well.
David and Meredith Kaplan U-M Basketball Head Coach Juwan Howard issued the following statement:
“We have extremely high standards in our program, culture, and university. As mentors, we must set the standards and pathways for our young men to succeed. 
“Starting with our game at Maryland, Dug McDaniel will not travel to road games until further notice.”
“Dug will dress for home games, but when we are away from Ann Arbor, he will work on achieving several academic goals that he has set and must meet.
“I’m disappointed, but this isn’t something we take lightly. This is a critical step for Dug’s success as a student-athlete.
“Going forward we will not have further comment.”
This is obviously bad news for an already struggling team, especially since McDaniel has shone at times during his sophomore season. Before this statement, McDaniel was averaging 17.8 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game, making him arguably Michigan’s most valuable player after 15 games.
