A small group of New Orleans Saints players will test the market in free agency this March, but few of them are starters or even critical backups. Nonetheless, it’s a group that includes many players the team would like to bring back.
Certain situations are more complex than others. Backup quarterback Jameis Winston, for example, reworked his contract so that the Saints had to choose whether to extend or release him, effectively canceling the deal. This is also true for Michael Thomas, a fan favorite wide receiver.
Furthermore, free agents are classified into various types. Exclusive rights free agents can choose to play for their current team at a minimum salary or sit out the 2024 season, so Rashid Shaheed is unlikely to leave. Restricted free agents may be offered a higher salary and possibly receive compensation if they sign elsewhere, but this is unusual. The vast majority of free agents will have unrestricted status, allowing them to pursue offers from any team.
