Ryan Papenhuyzen, a Storm fullback, has “overwhelming confidence” as he prepares for his return to the NRL after a difficult injury season.
The 25-year-old had a fractured patella in 2022, forcing him to miss a year of action before fracturing and dislocating his ankle during the playoffs.
Papenhuyzen was previously seen as a possible NSW Origin representative, but there were serious concerns that he might never play in the top grade again due to his extended absences.
In more positive news, the speedster has informed Nine News that he plans to race in Melbourne in the first round of 2024 and believes his best is yet to come.
“I believe I was overcome with emotion and disappointment, thinking, ‘Not again, who have I let down?’” I don’t think seeing my foot that way helped.
“It’s certainly not natural, but I have this overwhelming belief that I can (return to my best).
“I don’t know if that’s because of all the mental work I’ve done while I’ve been out, but I don’t see why not.”
With 49 tries in 72 games for the Storm, it’s no secret that the team needs Papenhuyzen to perform at his peak in order to challenge for a premiership in the coming years – and he’s doing everything he can to give back to the club.
Papenhuyzen spent the off-season working with famous sports injury specialist Bill Knowles, traveling to the United States on his own cost in an effort to return to the field.
“Storm has been paying me for 12 months, but I haven’t played… “I thought I’d use some of the money to fix myself up,” he explained.
“Coming back from my knee with Bill and the level of confidence and reassurance he gave me… I just want that clarity to keep moving the same way.
“There is, without a doubt, luck in every aspect of life – but I believe that the more you work, the more likely that luck will find you… “I’m due for some good luck.”
Melbourne will begin their NRL season against reigning premiers Penrith on Friday, March 8.
