LATEST NEWS: He is leaving

In just over a month, the NHL Trade Deadline for 2024 will occur. Regarding the Buffalo Sabres, it is anticipated that they will be sellers. As a result, pending UFAs like Victor Olofsson and Erik Johnson have surfaced in the rumor mill.

Zemgus Girgensons, another unclaimed free agent, is someone the Sabres may consider dealing for in the coming weeks.

Girgensons, 30, is in the last year of his contract, and if the Sabres decide not to re-sign him for the next campaign, they may consider offers for him. Although he wouldn’t be a significant addition to a playoff squad, teams searching for additional grit and experience on their fourth line might be interested in him.

Girgensons have had a difficult 2023–24 season. He has scored just four goals in 31 games. Despite his declining offensive output, his physicality and defensive prowess—as evidenced by his 54 hits this season—may still have some worth. In addition, he finished the previous season with 10 goals and 18 points, so he can improve as the season progresses.

Girgensons may find a market if other bottom-six choices begin to fall out of the picture if the Sabres are prepared to keep half of his money.

It would be interesting to see him on a different team, though. He has played 656 games for the Sabres, making him the player with the longest contract on the team. His contract is ending, so there is possibilities, but it will be interesting to watch whether he is transferred before the deadline passes from here.
