SAD NEWS: Melbourne Storm key player is going back

Bellamy hands Grant the reins as Storm names its third captain in three years.Following an internal meeting earlier in the week, the Melbourne Storm announced representative hooker Harry Grant as their captain for the 2024 season. This will be the club’s third captain in as many years.

After Christian Welch succeeded Jesse Bromwich as captain of the Storm last year, Grant becomes the team’s fifteenth captain, making history as one of the few players to hold the position. Grant is 25 years old.

Given that club legend Cameron Smith captained the team for 13 seasons and served as a co-captain in 2006 and 2007, it’s the beginning of a new era for the gifted No. 9.

Melbourne’s 2024 leadership group is heavily composed of spine players. Fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen, forwards Josh King and Tui Kamikamica, and vice-captains Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster make up the six-man group, which will be led by coaching coordinator Jason Ryles.

As a representative of Queensland and Australia, Grant has participated in 62 Storm games. In 2023, he was named Dally M Hooker of the Year and was one of three vice captains.

He began his amazing journey at the Storm with dominating junior teams. In 2020, he was loaned to the Wests Tigers, where he gained valuable experience instead of trailing behind Smith, who led the team to premiership glory in his final season. His rise to the top caps an incredible journey at the Storm.

Grant remarked, “Being given the chance to guide this group of players and our club is truly an honor.”

“It’s unbelievable to see my name listed beside legends like Cameron Smith, Robbie Kearns, Stephen Kearney, and so many others. The Storm has been captained by some true titans.”

In addition to Munster and Hughesy standing by my side, I know I can rely on Welchy for guidance and support because of his outstanding work over the past two seasons.

“I can’t wait to dive right into the season with this group of great players and natural leaders.”
