SAD NEWS: Devils power play is too predictable

The New Jerseys Devils are back in the winning column after taking three of their last four games, including a dominant 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers for the NHL’s Stadium Series at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Still four points out of a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, the return of Jack Hughes means Devils now have an offensive dynamo who can change the outlook of a game with a single shift. However, since Jan. 1, the Devils are dead last in power play percentage, and since the All-Star break, they only have a 7.7 percent goal rate.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Colby Cohen are joined by Jon Goyens to discuss a number of topics, including what’s wrong with the Devils’ power play and where there’s room for improvement.

Colby Cohen: The Devils’ power play has been okay percentage wise, going 22 percent over the course of the season, but as of late, it’s struggling. I wonder if Luke Hughes is the guy who is used to being the focal point of a power play and now he’s deferring to his brother. They just can’t seem to geet it together, and if they want to be a playoff team, they’re going to need to get it together.

Jon Goyens: To that point, I think at times, Luke is always going to his brother. It’s like big brother calling out little brother, but it makes them too predictable.

As of right now, the Devils’ power play is a lot of one-and-done, meaning after they shoot the puck, they’re not able to recover pucks well.
