February 7 – The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Florida Panthers 2-1 on Tuesday night in Sunrise, Florida, ending their season-worst five-game losing run thanks to a goal from Noah Cates in the third period.
For Cates, it was only his second goal of the year and his first since October 24.
Samuel Ersson, the goalie for the Flyers, made 20 saves to secure the victory. Since Carter Hart departed the organization and was accused of sexual assault, Ersson has been moved to starting position.
For the Flyers, Travis Konecny added another basket shortly after making his second All-Star appearance.
The return of forward Owen Tippett, who had been sidelined for four games with a lower-body injury, was also excellent news for Philadelphia. In 2017, he made his comeback against the squad who selected him in the first round.
With eighteen goals, Tippett is second on the Flyers.
The Panthers, who had lost their previous four games, were led in scoring by Carter Verhaeghe.

Anthony Stolarz, Florida’s backup goaltender, made 23 saves. Sergei Bobrovsky, the team’s top goaltender, took a break.
In the opening frame, Panthers captain and two-time All-Star Aleksander Barkov, who hasn’t scored a goal since December 16, struck the right post. He hasn’t scored in 17 games in a row.
At 9:22 of the first period, Florida scored on a power play to take the lead.
Verhaeghe took advantage of a tripping call on Nick Seeler of Philadelphia, grabbing a loose puck, skating into the left circle, and shooting the puck over Ersson’s stick, barely under the crossbar.

With 13:33 remaining in the second, Konecny’s goal knotted the score for the Flyers. Two excellent passes resulted in the goal. Joel Farabee chipped the puck ahead after Sean Walker whipped him a beautiful stretch pass. The remainder was done by Konecny, who beat Stolarz by moving to his left and firing to his right.
With 17:24 remaining in the third, a goal from Cates gave Philadelphia its first lead. Panthers defenseman Gustav Forsling made a mistake in his own end, which allowed for the goal. After snatching up the errant puck, Cates outwitted Aaron Ekblad and Ryan Forsling to score from the slot.
