Alabama football spring practice: Breaking down the Crimson Tide’s defense

The Athletic gave a preview of Alabama’s offense on Wednesday in advance of Monday’s start of spring practice. The focus of today’s spring practice primer is the defense, where the Crimson Tide will have three assistants who hold the title of defensive coordinator: Maurice Linguist, Colin Hitschler, and Kane Wommack, with Wommack serving as the play caller.

Nick Saban is another individual who has helped Wommack in advance of next week. The former coach had a meeting with Wommack on Wednesday morning, in addition to one earlier this month.

“I arrived on time,” Wommack stated to The Next Round. “I told my wife that the night before, making sure all of my cut-ups were ready for that meeting, was like cramming for a final.”

Wommack has been closely associated with the 4-2-5 defense, which replaced Saban’s 3-4 scheme. However, Alabama has changed over the past few years to become more of a 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 in order to match up with contemporary offenses. While there are some similarities between Wommack’s system and Saban’s, there are also some new terms and duties that will emphasize spring practice.
