For their open defensive coordinator post, the 49ers have interviewed Gerald Alexander, the safeties coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area on Friday.
News of Alexander’s interview was first reported by Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
The 39-year-old Alexander is one of the verified contenders for the position, along with former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, 49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks, 49ers defensive pass game coordinator Nick Sorensen, and Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt.
Alexander played in the NFL for five seasons, two of which he shared alongside Bullocks with the Detroit Lions. Bullocks and Alexander, two second-round draft selections for the Lions in 2006 and 2007, respectively.
Alexander spent the following few seasons as a coach at a number of universities, including Washington, Indiana State, Montana State, and Cal. He started his coaching career in 2013 at Arkansas State.
Alexander was appointed as the defensive backs coach by the Miami Dolphins in 2020. He remained in that role until 2022, when he became the assistant defensive backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Alexander was appointed as the safeties coach by Raiders coach Antonio Pierce earlier this year, prior to Alexander’s 49ers interview.
The 49ers fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after just one season, which led to the opening of the position.
