The Washington Capitals are back in action against the Philadelphia Flyers in what is billed as a crucial game, following an 8-3 thrashing at the hands of Detroit.
In the opening package of the telecast, Monumental Sports Network’s Joe Beninati stated, “It’s their biggest game to date.”
Personally, even though I admire Joe B’s optimism, I don’t feel strongly enough to say that it is. The Capitals are currently six points out of a postseason berth and have a 6.3 percent chance of making the playoffs per Money Puck as of this pregame. As an analyst and fan, I’m not concerned with the players using any means necessary to get to the big dance.
It appears to me that the Capitals are avoiding a complete rebuild. They will be in even better shape going forward if they approach this trade deadline appropriately. Handle the unbridled raucous behavior and be willing to bring in someone who could be a long-term asset. The reason Ryan Leonard is expected to have a significant role in their future is because they accepted who they were during the previous season.
Whatever happens tonight, let’s hope that they follow suit this year.

Capitals looking listless and had no answers for the Flyers. Philadelphia outshot them 11 to 5 in the first period and out-attempted them 16 to 10 at five-on-five.
