News Now: The Eagles will kick off the 2024 season in Brazil against the Green Bay Packers.

The NFL announced in February that the Eagles would play the first-ever NFL game in South America on Friday, September 6, as part of the 2024 season opener.

But there was one mystery. Who will be the opponent?
Now we know.
The Eagles will begin their 2024 regular season against the Green Bay Packers in São Paulo, Brazil, as announced by the NFL on Wednesday morning. Fans in Brazil will be treated to a matchup between two iconic organizations fresh off playoff appearances. In 2023, the Packers saw a young rebirth, finishing second in the NFC North with a 9-8 record and defeating the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card Round, led by first-year quarterback Jordan Love.

The Eagles and Packers last met in 2022, and Philadelphia won 40-33 at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles and Green Bay previously met in a season opener in 2010, as Philadelphia commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1960 NFL Championship Team, which defeated Vince Lombardi’s Packers to win the title. Lombardi’s Hall of Fame coaching tenure included only one playoff loss.

The prime-time game will be shown exclusively on Peacock. The kickoff time for the first Week 1 game on a Friday since 1970 has yet to be determined.

“The Eagles organization is honored to have been selected to play in the first-ever National Football League game in South America,” stated Jeffrey Lurie, Philadelphia Eagles Chairman and CEO, when the event was announced in February. “With the global growth of our sport as a primary objective for our league, we welcome the opportunity to expand our fan base throughout the world and deliver Eagles football to Brazil’s 38 million sports lovers. Brazil, one of the world’s most culturally varied countries, is an international melting pot, and we’re excited to visit later this year.

The match will take place at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil, with a seating capacity of 47,252. The stadium, which is home to the Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians, served as the official venue for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.

“This landmark first international game in South America demonstrates the ongoing expansion of our global footprint,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell during Super Bowl Week. “Playing on Friday night of Week 1 is a unique way to highlight our international growth and ambitions.”

This will be the Eagles’ second International Series game of the regular season. During the 2018 season, they played in London and defeated Jacksonville 24-18 at Wembley Stadium. The Eagles held preseason games in Mexico City in 1978, London in 1989 and 1991, and Tokyo in 1993.
