News Now: Joe Flacco responds to Andrew Berry on why he was not retained.

Deshaun Watson’s season ended against the Baltimore Ravens, and the Cleveland Browns signed former AFC North rival quarterback Joe Flacco to finish the 2023 regular season.
The Browns may credit the then-38-year-old quarterback for saving their playoff hopes by leading the team to a postseason berth.

During an interview on “The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima” on Thursday, Browns GM Andrew Berry answered questions about why the team did not re-sign Flacco to continue acting as Watson’s backup.

Berry’s frank response was that Flacco’s performance, which featured two pick-six passes in a startling 45-14 playoff loss, had no bearing on Cleveland’s choice to pursue quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley this offseason.

“I can tell you Anthony (Lima), we don’t really overreact to any individual performance (because) if that was the case, we would throw out our entire defense,” Berry said of the team’s performance in the playoff loss.

Lima followed up with a straight question on Winston’s signing, asking if Berry brought in the former Buccaneers and Saints signal-caller because of his age (30) as opposed to Flacco, who is now 39 years old.
Berry explained to Lima that age was not the sole issue when signing Winston to a deal in March.

Berry also cited costs and performance as considerations in his selection, noting that both Winston and Flacco were “great” quarterbacks.
Berry felt that Winston made the most sense for Cleveland based on other personnel adjustments the organization made.
