News Now: Jones, Ward, Summers, and Tagovailoa Workouts in the NFL

After being released by the Jaguars last week, veteran wide receiver Zay Jones continues to make the rounds. Since then, the 29-year-old pass catcher has made visits to the Titans, Cardinals, and Cowboys. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jones plans to visit the Chiefs tomorrow.

Jones’ impressive 2022 season, in which he caught 82 passes for 823 yards and five touchdowns, all career highs except for the touchdowns, was nearly wiped by a disastrous 2023 season in which the receiver missed eight games due to a PCL injury and femur damage. The Jaguars chose not to extend Jones’ final season of a three-year contract, which would have cost them $6.57 million in cap space.

Jones might be a key member of Patrick Mahomes’ brand-new wide receiver corps in Kansas City. The Chiefs signed free agent Marquise Brown and drafted Texas first-round rookie Xavier Worthy. They also return Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore, and Noah Gray from last year, but Rice may be in legal problems, while Jones, if fit, would outperform the other three while playing alongside Brown and Worthy.

Here are a couple other exercises going in the NFL:

Jonathan Ward, a career depth running back, is attending the Steelers rookie minicamp, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2. Ward has 69 career running yards on 17 carries in four seasons with the Cardinals and Titans combined. However, he has shown to be an active special teams contributor during that period.
According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS, the Broncos evaluated veteran linebacker Ty Summers during their rookie minicamp this past weekend. Summers has only one career start in five years with the Packers, Jaguars, and Saints, although he has appeared in 71 games during that time. Summers is a speedy linebacker who also plays well on special teams.

Taulia Tagovailoa, an undrafted Maryland quarterback and the brother of the Dolphins’ starting quarterback, will attend the Cardinals’ rookie minicamp this week, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The rookie will compete with last year’s fifth-round pick Clayton Tune and 2022’s third-round pick for Atlanta Desmond Ridder as potential backup quarterbacks for Kyler Murray in 2024.
Daniel Abraham, an undrafted linebacker who graduated from Harvard before playing as a graduate transfer at Villanova, has been invited to minicamps with both the Falcons and the Seahawks, according to Wilson. Because of his athleticism and intelligence, the quick linebacker clearly piques people’s curiosity.
