News Now: Juan Soto hits one of the most spectacular oppo homers you’ll ever see against the Astros.

Before Juan Soto wore pinstripes, Yankees fans knew he was special. But did they realize he could do that?

Soto, the early favorite for American League MVP, has demonstrated his hitting ability in every way possible to start the season. Clutch? He’s got it, whether he’s hitting left-field singles against Josh Hader to seize late leads in Houston or clearing the bases in the rain against the Detroit Tigers.

Do you want to try a left-hander against him? Sure. With runners in scoring position, he will only go 5-for-7 with two walks and a sacrifice fly. He can’t be neutralized in that way either.

After being presented with all available evidence of Soto’s ability, Astros rookie Spencer Arrighetti tried an intriguing technique on Wednesday evening in the Bronx. One pitch after allowing Anthony Volpe to hit a line drive single, he attempted to throw a 94 MPH fastball down the middle of the plate.

Soto was, shall we say, prepared. Instead of being regular and going for the porch, he decided to be an extraterrestrial and teach Jasson Dominguez how a Martian does it. Watch Soto’s easy swing as he sends this one 440 feet into the opposite field, off the back wall of the bullpen.

Yankees’ standout Juan Soto maintains MVP campaign with gravity-defying opposing home run.
Thousands of Mets supporters have responded to this tweet with the devastating remark, “He might do this for us next year, though, maybe!”

Most people don’t simply flick baseballs with level swings and send them 440 feet in the opposite way. Soto does not represent the majority of people.

The Yankees have won the first five games against the Astros this season and eight overall, including a three-game sweep last September led by Dominguez, the original Martian. New York’s dominance has sunk the Astros in an early deficit in the AL West, and while some playoff payback would be nice, Soto and the Yankees are probably hoping Houston never recovers and remains limply, watching 440-foot all-timer opposing rockets cascade over their heads.
