News Now: Chicago Bears’ Free Agent Signing Labeled it NFL’s Worst: ‘He Struggled’

The Chicago Bears were one of the more aggressive clubs in free agency this summer, and they emerged from the NFL Draft with generational quarterback prospect Caleb Williams and an electric receiver to round out their trio at the position.

Meanwhile, in free agency, the Bears added depth at running back and across all three levels of defense.

Last season, the Tennessee Titans moved Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles, but he never made an impact as the defense deteriorated during a historic second-half collapse.

CBS Sports’ NFL reporters participated in a roundtable discussion, which included the best and worst free-agent acquisitions.

Jordan Dajani called the Bears’ Byard acquisition the worst move of the offseason.

“He was an All-Pro safety not too long ago,” Dajani says. “However, Kevin Byard struggled after being dealt to Philadelphia last year. When he became a free agency this offseason, the Bears jumped on him, signing the former Titan to a two-year contract worth around $15 million.

Byard recorded 75 tackles and one interception last season before signing a $15 million contract with the Bears. If Chicago has any defensive vulnerabilities heading into the season, it may be at safety, which will depend on Byard’s return to form.
